Relaxing Toddler Night Time Routine
Did I just put the word “relaxing” and “toddler” in the same sentence? I have come to the realization that those two opposing forces are not generally in my vocabulary simultaneously, however, I am integrating new ways to make night time just a little easier. I’m not promising this will make them fall asleep any earlier (although a mama can hope!) but I can say the process has become a fun bonding time for me, Ryland, and Landon. Speaking of those boys, they have both suffered from sensitive and dry skin since they were born, but the SoCozy products that we have been using for the past few months are ideal for them!
Getting my kids to wind down is no easy feat, but here are a few things that I tend to do to make our nights more relaxing!
1. Get them in the bath
Maybe this is self explanatory, but sometimes on those days where the kids have been extra active, the last thing we want to deal with is getting them in the tub, cleaned, out of the tub, and dried off. I have found myself just trying to get my energy up enough so that I can get through it – but what I almost always realize once I’ve started is that bath time is a signal to the kids. It’s the start to their night time ritual and they know that it’s time to start shaking off the crazies of the day.
Ryland in particular was a tough case when it came to washing his hair and body. He has always had sensitive skin & most body washes and shampoos caused him a lot of irritation. I have now been using the SoCozy brand for about 6 months now & I couldn’t be more pleased with it. I have yet to see him have any issues with ANY of their products, which honestly is rare for him and his ever itchy skin! Also, he complains about just about every shampoo that it’s “hurting his eyes” but with SoCozy? Not a peep!
2. Take your time to get them ready for bed
It can be so easy to rush through the routine. Trust me, with two toddlers, I find myself really excited for bed time to hurry up and come (I know I’m not alone!) But, rushing doesn’t do those babies any good. I have been taking a minute with each of them at night. Taking the time to look into their eyes, brush their hair, add some SoCozy Sensitive Scalp Serum (to help with the dryness!) and just laughing and playing with them. No matter how small, kids know when they are being treated special & I have noticed that slowing down, even for just a minute, has helped in their ability to calm down as well.
3. Give them snuggles!
One of the best night time gifts we can give these little people is our love and time! As active as toddlers are, getting some snuggles out of them during the day is not as easy as it used to be. I love taking the time at night to hold them, read to them, pray with them, and let them know that they are loved. Sitting them down for a few minutes, without toys and electronics as a distraction, has helped my kids go to sleep easier and with less fuss.
