Over the years of being self employed, traveling, and working in ministry, one of my MOST asked questions has been “what do you do about healthcare costs?!” At first, I thought it was funny that so many people’s minds went there before anything else, but after a while, I understood. With rising healthcare costs and self employed families struggling to find options that fit their budget, I knew more people needed to get in on what we have known for years. If you know me in person, you have likely heard me talk about CHM before. I am so passionate about them as a ministry because of how beneficial they have been for our growing family, and how wonderful I know that they can be for so many others. As a young mama, I didn’t know of any other option besides traditional options. We needed something that fit our lives and our budgets much better and that’s when CHM came into play.
So how does the health cost sharing ministry work?
Essentially, exactly how it sounds. The ministry SHARES the cost of the medical bills throughout its members. My favorite part about being a part of CHM is how PEOPLE focused they are. Every time we have needed them, I can call and talk to someone who helps me through the process, is understanding, and cares! In fact, they always check in & make sure we are okay before they even start the call. I feel like a real person, a real part of the family, and not just a number when interacting with the organization. Instead of looking for ways to get out of assisting, I have had the team working on my behalf to get my bills paid and our situations resolved, time and time again.

What has our family used CHM for?
I am so glad you asked! Over the 6 years that we have been members, we have shared costs many, many times. We have shared the costs of 2 pregnancies and child births – one at a hospital and one at a birthing center, 2 miscarriages with hospital visits, an emergency surgery postpartum, surgery and treatment for my son’s clubfoot that he was born with, my husband’s medical bills from a car accident, a NICU stay – and honestly probably some more in there too! Those are the big ones that come to mind.
After all those hospital visits, complications, experiences, and treatments, you would expect we would have paid out a TON in deductibles and co-pays. However, this is exactly what CHM is so beneficial for growing families like mine. Christian Healthcare Ministries does not have deductibles, but rather they have a personal responsibility. Let me break it down for you… Anything under $1,000 is our responsibility, but if the amount of medical costs for any one incident is over $1,000 combined, then every eligible medical bill is shared for, 100%! For all of the incidents that I described above CHM shared over $70,000 (confirmed in our system) in medical expenses. What a blessing!
Christian Healthcare Ministries has been very affordable for us, monthly. I have price matched many times, and for a family of 6, the cost is unmatched – especially for what they have helped us with in return.
CHM is exactly what I believe healthcare costs sharing should be like. Christians, living out the mission to help one another. I personally also love that they don’t stop at just the medical bills that are eligible, but they also do their best to help members with outstanding costs or pre-existing conditions through their prayer and donations. Like I said above, they really truly CARE about their members and brothers and sisters in Christ.

There are no restrictions for CHM membership based on age, weight, geographic location, or health history. Participating adults must be Christians who live a lifestyle consistent with CHM’s Statements of Beliefs, attend worship regularly as health permits (Hebrews 10:25), and actively follow the teachings of the New Testament in its entirety.
